Saturday 24th October
Lunch and Movie
At the Tai Pan Hotel
Following the same format as previous events at the Tai Pan Hotel, on Sat 24th we will be meeting for the famous 206 baht buffet lunch (which is very good!) at the Tai Pan Hotel on Sukhumvit 23. Following that we’ll move up to the 5th floor meeting room for the film.
This time round, as a private group we will be looking at the incomparable film The Life of Brian by the Monty Python team.
This film changed comedy from that point on. It is regularly voted as the world’s funniest film (which is very subjective of course). And it is a masterpiece in terms of taking serious issues and showing them in a foolish light to highlight people’s attachments, and in this case, their need to follow leaders in religious nonsense.
The Life of Brian is silly, odd, and at times pretty outrageous. Which is what got it banned in Britain for a long time, and denounced by the Catholic church. Though it is set in Biblical times, the Python team always said the film is a comment on organised religion as a whole, and not about any one tradition.
Despite the silliness, the film is in fact a very sharp comment on religion, and people’s need to follow leaders. As a group we will pick apart many of these observations, and discuss the truth behind them – did the Python team mis-understand the essence of religion? Do their observations apply to Buddhism? What were the issues behind the various scenes? All just for fun, and to get to know some of the regular characters in the group. If you are not comfortable with a mic you do not have to speak. And no matter what you think of it all, always look on the bright side of life…
- 11am – 12:30 Lunch (arrive anytime in this period. It’s all informal and easy going)
- 1pm – move up to the meeting room
- 4 ish – finish
All ‘Littlebang’ visitors are welcome to join. You don’t have to know anyone before hand, just be sure to say hello at our tables when you arrive. There is always a diverse mix of interesting characters. The idea is to get to know some of the regular crowd a bit better.
Lunch is 206 baht per person (regular Hotel rate)
Room hire is 2500 baht, which is not much divided between us all.
Directions:
Goto Asoke BTS or Underground line. Walk East and go down Sukhumvit 23 for 336 meters (thanks Google Earth). Turn left into the Tai Pan Hotel. Restaurant is on the ground floor as you enter the building. Make sure to come and announce yourself – or they might not give you our discounted price for lunch!
