Vipassana Meditation

Vipassana Meditation

With the power of mind so developed, the yogi is trained to become sensitive to the atomic reactions that are always taking place in him/her. The course of training in Vipassana (insight), involves an examination of the inherent tendencies of all that exits within one’s own self. The yogi learns Anicca, Dukkha and Anutta as taught by the Buddha.

Then, following a realization of the four Noble Truths,he/she breaks through to state beyond suffering (Dukkh-Nirodha),enters the first stream of Sotapanna, and enjoys the fruit (Phala) of his/her endeavours in the “Nibbanic Peace Within”.

He/she who can enjoy this “Nibbanic Peace Within” is an Ariya. He/She may enjoy it when he/she may like to do so. When in that state of “Peace Within” called Phala, with supermundane consciousness. There is realization of the Peace of Nibbana.

No feeling can be aroused through any of the sense-centers. At the same time,his/her body posture beomes tightened (but both body and mind are at ease and gentle). In other words, he/she is in a state of perfect physical and mental calm.

In my spiritual workshop,I always remind my yogis not to withdraw from society. When they attain the highest state, they become the most effective people for struggling humanity through the Mind-Deliverance of Loving Kindness.

In conclusion, may I say that the change of humankind’s mental attitude through spirituality alone is the solution. What is necessary at the moment is mastery over the mind and not mastery over matter.

It is the Buddha’s Dhamma that should be studied by one and all for a new insight into the realities of human nature. In Buddhism; we have the cure for all mental ills that affect humankind. It is the evil force of the mind (past and present) that is responsible for the present state of affairs all over the world.

There exists a great field for practical research in Buddhism.Buddhists in Myanmar(Burma) are always eager to welcome those who wish to experience the beauty of the mind. In the Dhammapada, the Buddha said: “ A beautiful word or thought which is not accompanied by corresponding acts, is like a bright flower which has no scent.”

This paper was presented by Venerable Dr.Dhammarakkhita in 1996, July at the monastic-dialogue at the Gesmani, Trappic in Kentucky,USA.
